BrewDog co-founder Martin Dickie has left the Ellon-based craft beer giant, saying the decision was taken for personal reasons.

Dickie founded the company with James Watt in 2007 and played a central role in its growth from a small Aberdeenshire start-up into one of the UK’s best-known drinks brands.

He said he now wants to spend more time with his young family after more than two decades in the brewing and distilling industry.

The move comes a year after Watt stepped down as CEO, and current chief executive James Taylor described Dickie’s contribution as “immeasurable”, praising his creativity, passion and drive.

BrewDog has faced a series of challenges in recent years. The business confirmed last month it would close 10 UK bars – including its flagship Aberdeen venue – citing rising costs, increased regulation and wider economic pressures.

Despite those difficulties, BrewDog remains a major player in the sector, operating 71 bars in the UK, including 17 in Scotland, and venues overseas in Dubai, the US and Australia.

Dickie has confirmed he will retain his shareholding in the company,a nd alongside his departure, he is building a new business, Waterside Pharmaceuticals, which has secured a Home Office licence to grow cannabis for medical use.

Based in Aberdeenshire, the firm is about to harvest its first crop and Dickie has told AGCC his ambition is to become the UK market leader in the field.
