Brimmond pupils mark the centenary of the Armistice with personalised poppy cascade

Pupils at Brimmond School are marking this month’s centenary of the First World War Armistice with a moving personal poppy tribute.

The primary school pupils are currently working on a cascading poppy display with each pupil designing an individual centenary poppy from Lady Haig’s factory. Leading to the display is the school’s main corridor which is being transformed into a gallery of the children’s First Word War project work for all the local community to see.

The culmination of the children’s work will be a whole school assembly presentation on Friday November 9 with a sing-a-long of First World War songs for the community.

Councillor John Wheeler, education operational delivery convener, paid a visit to see the children’s work today and said: “It’s wonderful to see how schools have embraced this year’s centenary of the end of the war in 1918 and none more so than here at Brimmond.

“The project has touched the whole community and I’d like to pay my own tribute to the staff and pupils here for the marvellous work they have done in bringing everyone together to commemorate those who fought for their country in both wars”.

As part of the project, the pupils have been involved in book studies, poetry, interviews, baking, advertising in the community, and contacting local businesses in advance of the big assembly finale.

Sharon Crichton, principal teacher at Brimmond School said: “The children are so engaged with this project and it is turning into a fantastic local community event.”
