In 2026, Aberdeen based engineering design, survey and visualisation consultancy Cadherent celebrates its 20th anniversary.

From its origins as a technical draughting and design business, the company has developed into a multidisciplinary team helping clients understand, design and manage increasingly complex projects.

It represents two decades of adapting to changing technologies and client expectations while remaining focused on one objective: solving complex problems through accurate engineering, clear communication and intelligent visualisation.

Established in Aberdeen in 2006, Cadherent began as an engineering design and technical draughting company. It has since grown into a multidisciplinary design house with specialist engineering, survey and visualisation teams.

Today, its services include engineering design, draughting, project management, 3D laser scanning, dimensional control, photogrammetry, animation, architectural visualisation, virtual reality and augmented reality. Each discipline provides value, but Cadherent’s real strength comes from combining them.

Cadherent’s acquisition of Touch3D in 2024 also expanded the company’s capabilities beyond traditional engineering visualisation. The move introduced specialist expertise in photo-realistic architectural, interior, product and manufacturing imagery, allowing clients to see proposed developments in exceptional detail before construction begins. It also strengthened Cadherent’s ability to support architects, developers, housebuilders and manufacturers with high quality visual communication.

From drawings to digital environments

Engineering information has changed enormously since 2006. Technical drawings remain essential, but clients increasingly expect information to be interactive and accessible. An accurate 3D model or virtual environment can allow a much wider project team to understand a design.

Engineering remains at the centre of Cadherent’s work, covering structural, mechanical, piping and process requirements. Around that core, the company has developed extensive survey and visualisation capabilities.

This combination is behind Cadherent’s description of itself as “Engineers Who Animate”. It is not simply about making engineering look attractive. It is about making complex technical information easier to understand.

Growing alongside the energy industry

Cadherent’s Aberdeen roots have naturally shaped much of its history. The company has supported oil and gas, subsea, offshore and wider energy projects in the North Sea and internationally.

Over the past two decades, the energy sector has experienced rapid growth, major downturns, increasing regulation, advances in digital technology and a growing focus on decarbonisation. For companies within the supply chain, standing still has never been realistic.

Cadherent has continued to support conventional energy projects while transferring its engineering, survey and visualisation expertise into offshore wind, hydro power, carbon reduction and other developing markets.

Skills built within Aberdeen’s oil and gas industry, including brownfield engineering, remote surveys and construction planning are equally valuable in renewable energy.

The tools may evolve and the energy mix may change, but the need for safe, accurate and clearly communicated engineering remains constant.

Supporting Scotland’s whisky industry

Another important part of Cadherent’s development has been its work within the Scotch whisky sector.

Distilleries combine heritage, architecture, process engineering, production requirements and ambitious sustainability targets. This makes them uniquely complex working environments.

Cadherent supports distillery projects through engineering design, piping and structural design, laser scanning, photogrammetry, record keeping and compliance, interactive digital surveys, visualisation and project support.

Interactive photogrammetry can create a navigable digital record of a distillery, allowing users to view equipment and pipework remotely and identify assets, flanges, spools and documents.

People behind the technology

Cadherent’s progress has ultimately been driven by people.

Engineering software, survey equipment and visualisation platforms are only tools. Their effectiveness depends on the knowledge, judgement and creativity of those using them.

In 2024, Cadherent announced a strategic restructuring that brought five long-serving team members into the company as equity holding directors.

Together, they brought more than 55 years of combined service to the leadership team. The move strengthened operational responsibility and created a broader leadership structure for the future.

Twenty years and still evolving

The engineering landscape of 2026 is very different from that of 2006.

Data is captured faster, models are more detailed and teams collaborate across countries and time zones. Virtual reality, artificial intelligence and automation will continue to change how projects are designed and delivered.

Yet clients still need accurate work, honest advice and reliable suppliers that understand budgets, timescales and operational realities.

For Cadherent, the 20th anniversary is less about looking backwards and more about recognising the foundations on which the next stage of the business will be built: a multidisciplinary team, long-standing client relationships, continued investment and a belief that complex engineering becomes more valuable when people can clearly see, understand and interact with it.

After 20 years, Cadherent is still engineering, still surveying, still visualising and still evolving.
