Aberdeen & Northern Marts is pleased to announce that preparations are well-underway for the Young Farmers Overwintering Cattle Show and Sale and open show of 950 store cattle at Caithness Livestock Centre.
Now in its third year, 15 young farmers will compete for a selection of awards and prizes at the event, which will take place Monday, 2nd April. Judged by Alex Reid, Mill of Haulkerton, Laurencekirk, this year’s show and sale will feature five heifers and 10 steers, all competing for the top-prize in categories including best gross margin and best daily live-weight gain, as well as a home-bred cattle section. A £50 pot has been donated by the Charolais Society for the winner of the best Charolais in show.
The young farmers’ competition will begin at 8.30am, followed by the open show. At 10.00am the sale will commence and prize winners will be sold starting from 12pm, followed by the remaining young farmers’ entries. The sale will also feature the 950 store cattle in the open show, supported by North of Scotland Newspapers.
Stuart Slesser, centre manager at Caithness, said: “The Caithness Young Farmers Overwintering Show and Sale has seen steady growth in participation over the past three years, and we are delighted to continue attracting new entrants as the event’s popularity increases. Events of this nature play a vital role in the development of livestock breeding and rearing skills for young farmers, all while providing an opportunity to have them compete in a friendly environment.
“This show and sale is an important piece in how we contribute to the sustainability of the industry as whole – through supporting our young farmers of the North.”
