Alzheimer Scotland, which runs a local history and reminiscence class for those affected by dementia in the Aberdeen area, has received an £850 donation from the CALA Homes (North) community bursary.
A survey of local people with dementia, their families and carers last year found that local history was the top subject that the group wanted to see added to the programme of activities at The Dementia Resource Centre in Aberdeen.
Local historian, Dr Fiona-Jane Brown, is delivering the sessions which encourage participants to share personal memories, artefacts and photographs. The classes cover different topics such as the Blitz and former cinemas and shops in Aberdeen.
Andrea Watt, Community Fundraiser at Alzheimer Scotland, said: “CALA’s donation has helped us to schedule our local history and reminiscence sessions which are available for 40 members and their families and carers.
“The classes have been thoroughly enjoyed by all participants and are a great way to help boost their confidence and well-being.”
Alan Whitelaw, Project Manager at CALA Homes (North), visited one of the local history and reminiscence sessions to meet members of the group and the charity’s staff.
He said: “I was delighted to have the opportunity to visit the group and hear more about some of the fascinating topics covered during the sessions.”
Other successful community bursary applicants include 17th Aberdeen Scout Group, Seaton Community Church,
Pitscurry Day Service, SensationALL, Community Food Initiative North East (CFINE), Sunrise Partnership, GCRA, Aberdeen Riding Club, CHAS, and Aberdeen Science Centre.
