Aberdeen is to gain a new overnight rail connection to the West Midlands after the Caledonian Sleeper announced the launch of a new route.

The route will stop at Birmingham International station from January 2026, connecting the city to Aberdeen, Fort William and Inverness.

The move marks the Sleeper's first major expansion of the service in 30 years, the BBC reports.

Caledonian Sleeper's interim managing director Graham Kelly said research suggested there was demand for Birmingham to be added to the route and it was hoped the change would help contribute to tourism in the north of Scotland and the West Midlands.

He said: "This historic timetable update marks a significant milestone in our mission to further boost sustainable cross border travel options.

“Birmingham is the latest city set to benefit from our high-quality overnight train service as residents will be able to drift off in the West Midlands in their own private room and wake up to beautiful views of the Scottish Highlands.

“Similarly, we believe our new route will be incredibly popular with leisure tourists from Scotland given the wide range of sights and attractions in Birmingham and across the West Midlands to be discovered.”
