Mark Carney, Canada's new prime minister, has said his country will deal with Donald Trump "on our terms".
Defiant Carney was adamant Canada deserved respect and would only enter into discussions with Trump on trade and security on its own terms.
Carney made the comments during an exclusive interview with the BBC.
His office confirmed the new PM and Trump have spoken and agreed to meet in the near future.
However, White House deputy spokesperson Anna Kelly said: "The election does not affect President Trump's plan to make Canada America's cherished 51st state."
Carney has insisted this is "never, ever going to happen".
He told the BBC talks would be "on our terms, not on their terms", adding: "There is a partnership to be had, an economic and security partnership.
"It's going to be a very different one than we've had in the past."
