Fashion accessories chain Claire's has ceased trading at all of its remaining standalone stores in the UK and Ireland, affecting 1,300 jobs.

It was announced in February that the firm's last remaining Aberdeen shop would close for good, but it has now been confirmed all 154 stores across the UK and Ireland have shut.

The company, known for jewellery, bracelets and piercings, has struggling with the downturn of the high street and against cheaper online competitors.

Claire's 350 concession stores will continue operating.

Administrators, the BBC reports, said: "As of 27 April, all Claire's standalone stores in UK and Ireland have ceased trading. All store employees have been advised of redundancy."

Meanwhile in Aberdeen, Farmfoods is set to close its city centre store on George Street from May 3.

A spokesperson, The Press and Journal reports, said: “Our shop on George Street, Aberdeen, will close this coming Sunday after a 50% off all stock closure sale.

“We’re grateful to all customers who have shopped with us at the site over the years.”

The closure comes as building work is underway on a new Farmfoods store on the site of the former Bridge of Don barracks next to Lidl off King Street.

And footwear retailer Schuh has announced the opening date of its Union Square store in the former Bensons for Beds unit.

The existing Schuh branch on St Nicholas Street will close on May 14, with its new home in Union Square launching on May 15, The P&J reports.
