Aberdeen City Council leaders have invited Aberdeen FC to a meeting later this week in what the Dons hope will be "the first big step forward in some time" in relation to new stadium plans.

The development emerged last night as the football club held its 122nd AGM, with chief executive Alan Burrows indicated he and Dave Cormack would meet council bosses to discuss the "art of the possible".

Speaking at the meeting, chairman Dave Cormack it would be "pretty catastrophic" for Aberdeen as a city if the beach stadium did not progress and the club ended up moving out of the city to Kingsford.

After the meeting, Burrows told the BBC: "We remain positive in terms of looking towards these discussions on Friday.

"As recently as today, we were asked to attend, Dave and I, a meeting with the senior representatives from the local council and we are going to go along on Friday and discuss the art of the possible.

'We remain absolutely positive in terms of the relationship. We want to have a good relationship with the local authority, we want to work together in partnership for the betterment of the city and its residents and we look forward to Friday to see what that might bring."

Burrows added that he hoped the meeting would be "the first big step forward in some time" that would allow them to make "solid plans about what the next stage might be".
