Legislation to introduce fully autonomous vehicles to UK roads will be introduced during today's King's Speech.

"Level four" fully autonomous vehicles do not require a safety driver, allowing shopping to be delivered without a human.

There are currently six levels of automation, which range from level zero (a fully manual vehicle) to level five (fully autonomous).

Testing of level three is well underway in the UK, which is a mainly autonomous vehicle, although humas override is still required.

It's reported in The Times that Rishi Sunak is keen to push the bill through quickly as part of his desire to lead the world on AI, including on regulation.

It's also hoped that it will promote further investment in the UK.

A spokesman for the all-party self-driving vehicles group said: “Industry wants to see the government introduce legislation in the King’s Speech to enable the commercial deployment of self-driving vehicles.

“By 2035, this fast-growing sector will be worth at least £42 billion to the UK alone, but we need to fix outdated regulation before we can truly compete in this £650 billion global market.”

MPs have voiced concerns about the vehicles in the past, however.

They fear that mass damage could occur as a result of potential cyber attacks on them.

A round-the-clock taxi service delivered by autonomous vehicles was launched in San Francisco earlier this year, though a host of failures has led to calls for their full introduction to be paused.

Around 600 incidents involving the vehicles have been logged since Spring 2022.
