ECITB and the Offshore Project Management Steering Group launch new round of the Project Management Mentoring Programme

Effective delivery of projects to world-leading standards is vital to the future performance of the oil and gas sector.

To support this important agenda, the ECITB and the Offshore Project Management Steering Group (OPMSG) have established a Project Management Mentoring programme. Now in its third year, the 2017 programme was launched at an industry reception on Thursday May 25.

This year the programme will bring together 24 senior industry practitioners with a track record of successful project management. Selected from across the industry, including operators, tier-one contractors and the wider supply chain, they will lend their invaluable knowledge and experience to the development of a new cohort of project managers.

During a six-month guided relationship, mentors and mentees will agree target areas for development and work towards set objectives and plans tailored to the needs of each individual mentee. The scope of mentoring will include project management tools, behaviours and leadership development within the context of operations within the oil and gas sector.

The OPMSG has a vision to continually impart good practice in project execution across the oil and gas industry, through knowledge-sharing within the industry and the transfer of knowledge to and from sectors.

As a cross-sector initiative, the programme offers a wider perspective on mentoring than many internal schemes, taking into account areas such as client and customer engagement, external specialist knowledge and greater collaboration between different organisations working within the same industry.

Speaking at the launch of the Project Management Mentoring programme, Chris Claydon, ECITB chief executive said:

“The ECITB is proud to support the Project Management Mentoring programme. It is a significant initiative that is highly rewarding for mentors and mentees alike, while developing high-quality project managers for the industry.

The initiative also complements other programmes that the Offshore Project Management Steering Group is delivering, including our ground-breaking Project Collaboration Toolkit. ECITB is transferring the learning and experience gained from these programmes to other engineering construction sectors, including the nuclear industry where there is a clear appetite for similar programmes as those developed and successfully tested in the oil and gas industry.”

To date 29 mentees have completed the Project Management mentoring programme with overwhelmingly positive feedback.
