Heavy rain and flooding brings travel disruption

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for heavy rain in parts of eastern Scotland.

It warned of fast-flowing or deep floodwater "causing danger to life".

The amber alert is in place for Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Angus and Perth and Kinross until 15:00 on Friday.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) has issued 17 flood warnings. Police Scotland urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel.

More EIS strike days

Scotland's largest teaching union has announced two more strike days in a dispute over pay.

The Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) said its members in primary schools will strike on January 10.

This will be followed by strikes at secondary schools on January 11.

All EIS members are already due to strike on Thursday, November 24.

The union said employers had failed to make a new pay offer after a meeting on Thursday afternoon.

Teachers have been offered a 5% pay rise by local authority body Cosla but the teaching trade unions want 10% to reflect rising inflation.

The BBC reports that Scottish Government has previously warned there is no more money to fund public sector pay rises.

Bid to oust Reabold directors fails

Shareholders in Reabold Resources have put their faith in the North Sea firm's board to deliver on their promises, snubbing an attempt to replace them.

Energy Voice says Sachin Oza and Stephen Williams, the London-listed company's co-chief executives, will be breathing a sigh of relief after investors knocked back all the resolutions tabled by a rebel group.

The Reabold Requisition, which owns about 6.93% of the firm, was seeking to oust Reabold's board of directors.

It wanted to replace them with four new directors in order to install some "fresh blood", with the aim of improving the company's fortunes.

Pre-Christmas industrial action at Royal Mail

Royal Mail workers are to strike on six days in December, including Christmas Eve, usually one of the busiest days of the year for the company.

The BBC says the action is on top of four days already announced for late November, around the Black Friday shopping weekend.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said "the livelihoods of postal workers" were at stake.

Royal Mail said changes to the business were "not optional".

The long-running dispute revolves around pay, jobs and conditions at the privately-owned firm.

The new strikes have been called for December 9, 11, 14, 15, 23 and 24 - the busiest time of the year for deliveries.

The CWU, which represents more than 115,000 postal workers at Royal Mail, said it still wanted a negotiated settlement with Royal Mail Group and would "continue to engage the company to that end".

Twitter's offices shut

Twitter has told employees that the company's office buildings will be temporarily closed, effective immediately.

In a message seen by the BBC, workers were told that the offices would reopen on Monday.

It did not give a reason for the move.

The announcement comes amid reports that large numbers of staff were quitting after new owner Elon Musk called on them to sign up for "long hours at high intensity" or leave.

The message went on to say: "Please continue to comply with company policy by refraining from discussing confidential company information on social media, with the press or elsewhere."
