I was 'slam dunk' for SNP leadership until revealing gay marriage views - Forbes
Former SNP minister Kate Forbes has claimed that she was viewed as a "slam dunk" for the party leadership until she revealed her views on gay marriage.
The ex-deputy first minister was narrowly defeated in a 2023 SNP contest by Humza Yousaf, having been criticised for beliefs she attributed to her Christian faith.
Speaking at the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship (ARC) conference last week, Forbes said she was advised to lie about her views but insisted that the public admired politicians who took difficult stances on matters of integrity.

Goat and skin in millions of 'lamb' kebabs compared to horsemeat lasagne scandal
Millions of people are likely to have eaten takeaway kebabs made with goat, skin and fat when they thought they were buying lamb meat, in a fraud that investigators have compared to the 2013 horsemeat lasagne scandal.
BBC News has been told the kebabs from Kismet Kebabs, which describes itself as one of the UK's largest doner kebab makers, were sold to fast food outlets across the country for years.
The firm was fined £500,000 after pleading guilty in court to a fraud that dates back to 2021.

SNP rejects calls for joint inquiry into Peter Murrell scandal
The SNP has rejected calls for Holyrood to work with Westminster to investigate the Peter Murrell scandal.
The UK parliament’s Scottish affairs committee (SAC), which is considering launching its own inquiry into the corrupt former chief executive’s embezzlement spree, said it would write to Scottish parliament committees to explore “joint working” over the affair.
However, the SNP immediately dismissed the call, saying the matter had already been voted on in the Scottish parliament. Last month, the SNP and Greens, who also oppose an inquiry, used their numbers to reject a bid by Labour to secure an investigation in the Scottish parliament.
