For Fraser, S6 at Robert Gordon's College has been a year of leadership, rugby, languages and making the most of opportunities both in and beyond the classroom.

After a successful year as School Captain, he received his results while in New Zealand on the Otaki Scholar trip. Alongside his studies, he supported the organisation of the prefect team and helped to represent the school throughout the year, a role that required time, organisation and commitment alongside his sporting and other responsibilities. He will now go on to study Finance at the University of Glasgow, alongside independent language classes.

Rugby has been a big part of Fraser’s time at the College. His involvement in the 1st XV and the wider rugby programme has been one of the highlights of his school career, including the opportunity to play at Murrayfield. The sport has also given him a strong work ethic that he feels will stay with him beyond school, alongside his involvement with Glasgow Warriors.

“The rugby programme when I joined the 1st XV” was one of his favourite parts of school, although he is equally quick to mention the people he has met along the way. He speaks warmly about the friends he has made, the teachers he hopes to stay in contact with and the wider influence of the College.

“The type of people our school makes us is second to none,” he says.

Fraser’s time at RGC has also given him the opportunity to pursue interests that will continue into the future. German and Spanish have been important parts of his studies, alongside Finance, and he has particularly valued the chance to study subjects that may not otherwise have been available to him. His interest in languages has also extended beyond the classroom, including supporting Primary 7 pupils with German language learning.

His achievements in German were recognised with the German Consulate Prize, while his selection as an Otaki Scholar gave him another opportunity to develop his understanding of the wider world. The Otaki trip was a fitting experience at the end of his final school year, bringing together his interest in languages, international opportunities and learning beyond the classroom.

He has also made time for service and work outside school. As part of his Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, he has been involved in litter picking in his local area. He has worked in a care home since the age of 13 and more recently at a hospitality venue. These experiences have given him the opportunity to meet and work with people from different backgrounds, while developing skills and independence away from school.

Looking ahead, Fraser will study Finance at the University of Glasgow and plans to continue developing his language skills through independent language classes. Talking about his aspirations after university, he says, “My aspirations are really anything involving languages, finance and some context where I can help people or reach out to underdeveloped countries.”

After a busy final year as School Captain and six years of making the most of the opportunities at RGC, Fraser’s next step will take him into a new environment, but the combination of his academic interests, leadership experience, rugby and the relationships he has built at the College will continue to shape what comes next. He leaves with plenty to look back on and even more to look forward to.
