The homelessness minister has resigned from Sir Keir Starmer's government over claims she evicted her tenants then increased the rent by £700 a month.

Rushanara Ali was accused of “staggering hypocrisy” and behaviour that her own department will soon make illegal.

In a letter to the prime minister she said "at all times I have followed all relevant legal requirements" but that remaining in the role would be a "distraction from the ambitious work of this government".

The row was sparked after the MP for Bethnal Green & Stepney ended her tenants' fixed-term contract in order to sell up. However, Ms Ali re-listed the house for rent a higher price within in six months, something she is trying to outlaw under the Renters' Rights Bill.

The former tenant said she was sent an email in November giving four months' notice the lease would not be renewed, the i newspaper reported.

Kevin Hollinrake, the Conservative Party chairman, accused Ali of “staggering hypocrisy”, saying: “She’s spoken out about exploiting tenants, about providing more protections to tenants. You can’t say those things, then do the opposite in practice, as a landlord.”
