Aberdeen-based charity Gathimba Edwards Foundation (GEF) is excited to announce the return of the iconic Mel’s Mile race on Union Street this summer.
Held as part of the Celebrate Aberdeen festival, the event is being supported by local process safety firm, Salus Technical.
The race, now in its third year, offers runners of many ages and abilities the rare opportunity to run down Aberdeen’s main street. All money raised will help support children and families in both Kenya and the north-east of Scotland.
Named in honour of Aberdeen running legend Mel Edwards, the event continues to grow in popularity. Mel’s son and GEF co-founder Myles Edwards said: “We’re thrilled to have Salus Technical’s support once again for Mel’s Mile. Their sponsorship and help from volunteers make a huge difference and will hopefully inspire other local people to get involved.”

David Jamieson, managing director at Salus Technical, added: “We are extremely proud to be supporting GEF for the third year, recognising the amazing work they do with children both here in Aberdeen and in Kenya. It’s great to be part of such a special event that brings the community together in the heart of our city. The Salus Technical team are all looking forward to volunteering on the day, it’s a great chance for us to have fun while giving back to a cause we believe in.”
Originally held at Aberdeen Sports Village, Mel’s Mile found its new home on Union Street in its second year thanks to the support of Celebrate Aberdeen. The course begins at Holburn Junction, turns left along Union Terrace, passes His Majesty’s Theatre (HMT), descends and ascends Schoolhill, turns right past Marischal College, and finishes on Broad Street.
As the event continues to grow, GEF is encouraging others to get involved behind the scenes. Volunteers play a vital role in supporting events like these.
