Former US president Joe Biden has been diagnosed with "aggressive" prostate cancer which has spread to his bones.

A statement from the politician's office said Biden was diagnosed on Friday after seeing a doctor earlier in the week.

The BBC reports Biden, 82, and his family are now reviewing possible treatment options, with his office confirming the cancer is hormone sensitive, meaning it's likely capable of being managed.

The statement from his office said: "Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms.

"On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterised by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone.

"While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management."

Support for the former president has poured in since his diagnosis, with Donald Trump posting on social media that he was "saddened", adding: "We wish Joe a fast and successful recovery."

Biden's former vice-president Kamala Harris also posted: "Joe is a fighter – and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership."
