Four Labour MPs have been suspended by Sir Keir Starmer over repeated breaches of party discipline in relation to the welfare cuts rebellion.

Neil Duncan-Jordan, Brian Leishman, Chris Hinchliff and Rachael Maskell will now sit as independents in the House of Commons, the BBC reports.

Three further Labour MPs, Rosena Allin Khan, Bell Ribeiro-Addy and Mohammed Yasin, have had their trade envoy roles removed.

All seven broke party lines earlier this month to vote against the government's welfare reform bill.

In total, an additional 40 Labour MPs also rebelled against the planned cuts, forcing ministers to dilute the proposed cuts.

The rebellion undermined the prime minister's authority, which had been weakened already with other policy reversals such as the winter fuel allowance.
