Lathallan School in Johnshaven is welcoming primary seven pupils to apply for a range of scholarships which recognise their academic abilities or talents in sport or the arts.
Dedicated scholarship days will be held on Tuesday, January 28 and Wednesday, January 29, giving potential pupils the opportunity to shine.
Located on the edge of the rugged North Sea coastline and just 40 minutes from Aberdeen, Lathallan School is a truly unique independent school for pupils aged five to 18, with facilities including a purpose-built science centre, two zip-wires, on-site farm and treehouse classroom.
The school offers a co-educational experience and optional boarding, with additional nursery facilities available for children aged six weeks to five.
Interested pupils can apply for academic, all-rounder, sport and creative scholarships, with successful applicants benefiting from a five to 20 % reduction in school fees.
Further bursary options, which can reduce fees by as much as 100 percent, are also available.
Pupils wishing to be considered will be expected to spend January 28 and 29 at Lathallan School. Those applying for a sports or creative based scholarship will be tested on their skills by school staff and specialist tutors.
Richard Toley, headmaster at Lathallan, said: “At Lathallan we’re passionate about outdoor learning and preparing pupils for the working world with our teachers providing a rich and engaging educational environment which goes beyond the classroom.
“We have academic and all-rounder scholarships available for pupils as well as options for those whose strengths lie in sport, rugby 7s, netball, music, art, drama, bagpipes and drums.
“This is a great opportunity for pupils and parents to consider a well-rounded education where pupils enjoy smaller classroom sizes than other city centre-based independent schools, offering them a learning experience tailored to their individual strengths.”
Mr Toley added: “We look forward to welcoming prospective pupils and family members to Lathallan next week when they can experience our unique school and facilities for themselves.”
Among the current pupils who have previously been awarded scholarships is swimming champion Dean Fearn, the current U12s Scottish 50m freestyle record holder who previously also held the record for 50m backstroke.
S1 pupil Dean (12) said: “I’ve had a very successful year in swimming and picked up a lot of medals at swimming galas, while also breaking national records. At Inverness, for example, I picked up seven medals - three golds, three silver and bronze.”
Dean added: “I’m very ambitious and I would like to force my way into national teams and events when I’m older.”
Fellow S1 pupil Arabella Blackburn (12) won two national Scottish Cycling U12 title last year and a British championship.
Arabella said: “I’ve been at Lathallan since J1 and have learned so much in that time both academically and in sport.
“Lathallan has also helped me with my sport. I’m a Scottish and British champion at cycling and I have a lot to thank one of our Junior School teachers, Mr Carter, for. If it wasn’t for him or Lathallan I wouldn’t have done cycling. He encouraged me to join a triathlon club so I joined Dundee Thistle and my cycling really took off from there.
“I’m now the U12 Scottish Champion at Omnium after winning it at the Chris Hoy Velodrome last year. I’ve also won the British Cycling Championships and I’m aiming for more in the future. Lathallan offers you so many opportunities and will support you in any way they can to succeed.”
Lathallan is based within expansive 60-acre grounds at the historic Brotherton Castle in Johnshaven.
The school, which recently celebrated its 90th anniversary, is easily accessed from the city, with school buses taking just 40 minutes from Aberdeen thanks to the AWPR.
