An Aberdeenshire construction and engineering firm, specialising in steel, cladding and sheet metal, is helping pave the way for the next generation of industry professionals - one school visit at a time.

KR Group Scotland has launched an ambitious initiative to give school pupils hands-on insight into careers in construction and engineering through its KRedit programme. A standout element of the programme is its recent partnership with St Machar Academy, where a group of third-year pupils were given a unique introduction to the world of steel and cladding.

Over an eight-week period earlier this year, KR Group staff, including senior leaders, delivered weekly sessions designed to bring the construction industry to life for young people facing challenges in school. Topics ranged from reading technical drawings and installing cladding panels, to health and safety essentials, including PPE use, risk assessments, and edge protection setup.

Importantly, the sessions weren’t just classroom-based. With a KR Group site located just minutes from the school, pupils were able to see live demonstrations, speak directly with site staff, and witness real work in action - an experience that left a lasting impression on many.

Louise Holmes, Partnership Officer at Aberdeen City Council, praised the impact: “The group were on time and engaged—very rare for some of these pupils. One said they liked ‘speaking to respected members of KR Group staff.’ That says it all.”

She continued: “A huge thank you to KR Group for giving 16 of our young people the chance to learn about the company and witness one of their live projects in action.”

“Over the course of eight weeks, the pupils gained valuable insight into health and safety procedures, including RAMS, construction drawings and specifications. They tried on asbestos suits and harnesses and learned about the plant and equipment used on site.”

“Our weekly visits to the live project gave them the opportunity to observe real-time progress and speak directly with team members about their roles.”

“It was fantastic to highlight the wide range of careers available in construction and show how in-demand these skills are. We hope this experience has inspired some of our pupils to consider a future in the sector.”

While not every student left convinced that a career in construction was their future, many came away with valuable skills, insight, and a new appreciation for the opportunities the industry can offer.

This initiative is part of KRedit, KR Group’s broader programme aimed at bridging the gap between education and employment. In March, the firm hosted an open day at its Newburgh HQ, welcoming more than 30 pupils from local schools. The event showcased the company’s operations across office, workshop, and site teams, and highlighted apprenticeship and career opportunities available within the business.

KR Group says it remains committed to investing in future talent, despite rising industry costs and the ongoing pressure of balancing outreach with project delivery.

Founded by Kenny Robertson and Nicola Fraser, who both grew up in remote Aberdeenshire, KR Group is rooted in the belief that every person deserves opportunity - regardless of background.

KR Group’s Business Director, Nicola Fraser said: “That’s why we created KRedit: to open doors for young people who may not otherwise consider construction, particularly those from rural or working-class communities.”

“We’ve faced challenges - battling rising costs, and team capacity - but remain committed. Our work is not about publicity; it’s about helping young people see their potential. By investing in youth and strengthening community ties, KR Group is not just building infrastructure - we're building brighter futures. And we’re proud of that.”

With programmes like KRedit and partnerships with schools such as St Machar Academy, KR Group Scotland is proving that the construction industry can be a powerful force for education, inspiration, and local impact.
