Sir Keir Starmer is facing a revolt from Labour MP's after scrapping a manifesto pledge to give workers the right to claim unfair dismissal from day one. 

The pledge, which was championed by former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, would change the qualifying period for unfair dismissal from 24 months to one day. Workers will now have to have been in their job for at least six months to qualify.

The decision to abandon the plans has triggered backlash from left-wing Labour MPs and the union Unite, which accused Starmer of gutting Labour’s Employment Rights Bill.

It comes a day after the Government unveiled £30billion of tax rises to fund a rise in welfare spending in an attempt to win over Left-wing backbench critics.

FTSE100

The UK's flagship share index, the FTSE 100, was up 36-points at 9,704 shortly after opening this morning.

Brent crude oil futures were down 0.50% at $61.64 a barrel.
