Aberdeen-based McGregor Glazing has successfully completed the window replacement project at the McDonald’s restaurant on Union Street, marking the final stage of its contribution to the building’s wider refurbishment.

The project saw the team remove and replace a total of 33 windows, carefully upgrading the building from ageing single glazing to energy-efficient double glazing, while preserving the character of one of the city centre’s most recognisable frontages.

The scale of the work presented unique logistical challenges. With 117 steps leading to the top floor, two McGregor labourers made the climb more than 100 times each over the course of the installation. The largest feature, an impressive arched window at the top of the building weighed 86 kilos, requiring careful coordination and specialist handling to install safely.

Company Director Lisa Stewart said: “Completing this project is a real milestone for our team. Union Street is at the heart of Aberdeen, and to play a part in enhancing one of its most recognisable buildings makes us incredibly proud.

The practical challenges, from the sheer number of stairs to manoeuvring the arched window into place really showcased the strength, skill and teamwork of our team.”

As well as improving the visual appearance of the building, the upgrade to double glazing will significantly enhance energy efficiency, helping reduce heat loss and improve comfort within the building.

McGregor Glazing provides domestic and commercial glazing services across the North East, including window replacements, glass repairs and bespoke door installations. The family-run business has been serving homeowners and businesses in Aberdeen for more than 30 years.
