Name: Shelley Weston
Company: John Lawrie Metals Limited
Job title: Business Development & Communications Manager
Give us the elevator pitch for your business.
John Lawrie Metals is one of the largest scrap metal recyclers in Scotland, handling around 200,000 tonnes of scrap metal annually. With metal recycling facilities in Aberdeen, Shetland and Evanton (near Inverness), we support the full range of scrap producers, from major energy sector operators and large-scale decommissioning projects through to local trades and domestic householders. Our services are flexible and tailored to meet each customer’s requirements, ensuring materials are processed safely, responsibly and efficiently.
Who are your customers?
Our customers range from the energy majors, decommissioning and vessel contractors, through to commercial businesses, trades and domestic householders. Regardless of scale, we work closely with each customer to provide a service that fits their needs, offering flexible solutions and a professional end-to-end recycling process.
What is the biggest challenge and opportunity your organisation is facing right now?
Like many businesses, one of the biggest challenges we face is the continued rise in operational costs, particularly fuel, which impacts transport and logistics across the sector.
However, our biggest opportunity comes from being part of the ArcelorMittal Group. This gives us an advantage over our peers, and a single step duty of care, as we do not rely on third-party providers for end-to-end recycling and steel remanufacturing. ArcelorMittal is investing heavily in new recycling methods and low-carbon steel production, through the installation of new electric arc furnaces developed to produce steel with one of the lowest carbon footprints on the market.
