FPSO and marine integrity management and repair specialists Marine Technical Limits (MTL), celebrates 20 years in business with a significant increase in activities.

The firm, which is based in Kintore, has gone from strength to strength since its inception in 2003. Headed up by Calum MacLean and Matthew Lewin, the organisation started its journey in the global energy sector from their home offices, leveraging Skype to stay connected and work efficiently.

Since then, it has grown significantly, with headquarters in Kintore, Aberdeenshire and more than 40 members of staff. The large office and warehouse facilities provides a great working environment for our teams and enables MTL to store equipment, carry-out research and prepare projects for its global clients.

Calum MacLean, Projects Director at MTL said: “The last 20 years have been incredible for MTL. We have established ourselves as specialist vendors in the industry and that’s thanks to the incredible people we employ. With our specialists onboard we can deliver exceptional services and outcomes for our clients and that’s been proven through their continued support and custom. This year we have greatly increased our annual workload, welcoming eight new assets and increasing turnover by £2.1Million”.

The assets were of varying type including cylindrical units, semi- submersibles, and fixed platforms – which are positioned throughout the globe including UK, Ireland, Canada, Brazil, and West Africa.

Matt Lewin, MTL’s Technical Director, said: “We have had an incredibly busy year, delivering risk-based integrity management strategies, cargo and ballast tank entry, repairs and safety management, valve actuator replacement and repair, rudder retaining ring repair, engineering, and execution, waterbacked welding, hot-work, on-station repairs all supported by our amazing PYXIS software offering.

“When carrying out our workscopes we were met with a variety of differing scenarios including assets which were operational and on-station, going or coming out of conversion, in shipyard, looking to go to new field or needed life extension work. We also supported assets which were in periods of redeployment, decommissioning or end of field life.

“For the last year we have serviced more than 20 assets, which is a new record for MTL – what a way to celebrate our 20-year anniversary.”

Throughout the last two decades MTL has also made huge strides in confirming its position as innovators, challenging the “industry standard” approach through research and development supported by determination. In particular, research into waterbacked welding was an incredibly difficult and complex challenge which gained Class recognition and certification.

As a specialist service vendor, MTL also plans and leads hot works and works in confined spaces, in vessels that are on-station and in operation. These projects can be multifaceted and hazardous but with MTL’s bespoke Safe System of Work, safety is of primary importance and is always part of the plan.

Calum added: “Our employees are industry experts in this field, and we firmly believe a good job is delivered through careful planning and having a sound understanding of the complexities of performing the services we do, in the environment we do them.

“Ensuring we address all aspects of any workscope, recognise and put in place contingency plans for all eventualities, while maintaining our stringent safe systems of work, is of the utmost importance to us – for every job.”
