On June 13, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation (AAF) proudly observes National Fragrance-Free Day, an initiative aimed at raising awareness about the significant impact fragrances have on individuals with asthma and allergies.
This day serves as a crucial reminder for everyone to consider the health implications of scented products.
Fragrances found in perfumes, air fresheners, and personal care items can trigger severe asthma attacks and allergic reactions in susceptible individuals. The AAF seeks to educate the public about these risks, while fostering a more inclusive environment for those affected.
Vicki McGrain Rae, Head of Asthma and Allergy Services and Health Promotion, emphasises the importance of this day: “National Fragrance-Free Day is an opportunity for everyone to understand how even small changes, like refraining from using scented products, can make a big difference for people living with asthma and allergies.
"We encourage everyone to participate and show their support.”
Martina Chukwuma-Ezike, CEO of the AAF, adds: “Fragrance can be a hidden trigger for many, often overlooked by those who do not suffer from asthma. It’s vital that we raise awareness and create environments that prioritise health and safety. By choosing to go fragrance-free today, we can demonstrate our compassion for those affected.”
The AAF encourages individuals to donate £2 to support asthma education and awareness initiatives. Together, we can help reduce the impact of fragrances on the health and well-being of those living with asthma and allergies.
We will be hosting information stands at Aberdeen Aquatics Centre and Trinity Centre on the day.
