Furious fishermen have branded Sir Keir Starmer's new UK-EU deal a "horror show" for their sector.

The Scottish Fishermen's Federation (SFF) says benefits of the deal in defence, exports and travel have only been achieved "on the backs" of coastal communities and the fishing industry.

Under the deal, current access to UK waters for EU boats - which had been due to expire in 2026 - will now continue for the next 12 years.

It's a move, The Times reports, which is likely to benefit fishermen from France, The Netherlands and Denmark.

The Brexit deal negotiated by Boris Johnson's administration resulted in the UK regaining 25% of EU fishing quotas, but the industry had hoped a much better deal would be agreed when that expired in2026.

And rather than negotiating access rights each year, the new deal means they are locked in place right up to 2038.

Despite Starmer assertion that his deal was "good for fishing" and would bring "stability", Elspeth Macdonald, chief executive of the SFF, branded it a "disgrace".

Reported in The Times, she said: “It is clear that Sir Keir Starmer made the whole deal on the backs of our fishermen and coastal communities, granting EU vessels 12 years of continuous access to UK waters at the last minute in order to secure other objectives,” she said.

“Any attempt by either the UK or EU to portray the new deal as a continuation of existing arrangements would be a lie, because in fact the Trade and Co-operation Agreement paved the way for annual access negotiations from 2026.

“At the weekend, Sir Keir said the deal would be measured against how much it would improve job prospects and allow our communities to flourish. Giving away a national asset such as our rich and healthy fishing grounds for no discernible benefit not only fails both of these tests, but is a disgrace that will ensure the enmity of this proud industry for many years to come.”
