Scotland's former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced she will stand down as an MSP and not seek re-election to Holyrood next year.
Ms Sturgeon - who represents the Glasgow Southside constituency - made the announcement on Wednesday, saying that the decision was "far from easy."
After the ex-SNP leader confirmed the news on social media, she told BBC Scotland News that her time in parliament had been a "privilege beyond words."
She added: "But the time is right for me at this stage in my life to close the book on that chapter and open a new one."
Ms Sturgeon resigned as first minister in 2023 after eight years in the role, making her Scotland's longest serving leader and first female to hold the title.
However, her resignation as party leader was followed by a turbulent period for her and the SNP.
The former SNP leader was arrested in 2023 in relation to Operation Branchform, a police investigation into the SNP’s finances, but was released without charge pending further investigation.
Announcing her decision to step down, she said she was "proud" of her achievements during her time in office and "would leave it to others" to criticise her legacy.
