Aberdeen’s Weekend Night Buses service is to be extended for Scotland’s World Cup group stages matches to allow revellers to get home safely.
Funded via bus lane enforcement, the existing First Bus-contracted Night Bus services are to be enhanced in the early hours of Sunday 14 June and Saturday 20 June. There will also be an additional journey on Sunday 14 June with city centre departures at 4.30am on all five routes and an additional night bus service on all five routes on Thursday 25 June with departures at 1.30am.
Double decker buses will also be operated to support with capacity. All the First Bus Night Bus services will be free of charge for the Scotland group stage matches. Normal Night Bus fares apply for other services.
Aberdeen City Council chief officer of city development and regeneration Julie Wood said: “A large number of people are expected to be in the city centre watching Scotland play in the group stages so extending the Weekend Night Bus services by a few hours will help revellers get home safely.
“We wish Scotland all the best for the World Cup group stages and remind people watching them in city centre venues to celebrate in a sensible manner.”
Davie Adam, Operations Manager at the First Bus Aberdeen depot, said: "We’re as excited as all Scottish fans about our group games in the World Cup.
“We want everyone to enjoy the feelgood factor of the Scotland team competing for the first time since 1998. Fans will have the information in plenty of time to get home safely by bus after the final whistle.”
The five Night Bus services are:
- N1, City Centre (Alford Place) – Danestone, via Seaton; Dubford and Ashwood;
- N17, City Centre (Union Terrace) – Inverurie, via Great Northern Road, Bucksburn & Dyce;
- N23, City Centre (Bridge Street) – Kingswells, via Summerhill and Sheddocksley;
- N201, City Centre (Bridge Street) – Banchory, via Mannofield; Cults; Bieldside; Milltimber; and Peterculter;
- N18, City Centre (Bridge Street) – Cove/Charleston via Kincorth.
