Two North-east cousins have raised over £19,000 for charity after completing an epic coast to coast cycle challenge across Scotland - all before sunset.

Mat and Jonny Northcroft were among 18 cyclists who took on the Beat the Sun challenge in support of Gathimba Edwards Foundation (GEF), co-founded by Mat’s cousin, Myles Edwards. Starting at sunrise (4:10am) from Peterhead Harbour, the team reached Ardnamurchan Lighthouse just before sunset (10:19pm), completing the 233-mile route in under 18 hours.

The event built on a previous solo version completed by Mat Northcroft several years ago, and raised funds for GEF projects that support vulnerable children and families in both Kenya and the north-east of Scotland.

Mat Northcroft, 51, from Muchalls, has completed several endurance events for the charity. He said: “There’s something special about racing the sun across Scotland’s widest point. It was beautiful, tough, and worth every pedal stroke for the kids we’re helping.”

The cyclists passed through Keith, Aberlour, Aviemore, and Glenfinnan, with the final stretch featuring steep climbs around Ben Laga and views of Skye and the Cuillin hills.

Jonny Northcroft, a journalist originally from the north-east and now based in Leicester, described the final 50 miles as the hardest.

“Crossing the finish line just before sunset felt incredible. We're overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone who supported us,” he said.

Myles Edwards, who supported the event from the ground as part of the vehicle and logistics team, added: “It was truly special to see the determination and camaraderie among the riders. Huge thanks to Herd Van Hire Aberdeen for providing the main support van, and to everyone who helped make the day such a success.”

Funds raised will go towards GEF’s ongoing work, including building homes for children in Kenya and supporting families across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.
