Police Scotland is preparing for a possible visit by former US President Donald Trump to Aberdeenshire later this month.

Trump is expected to return to his golf resort north of Aberdeen, where a new 18-hole course – the New Course – is nearing completion.

If confirmed, this would be Trump's first visit to Scotland since winning the US presidency in November.

Assistant Chief Constable Emma Bond said Police Scotland were preparing in advance for what would be a "significant policing operation", despite no official confirmation yet.

The Scottish Government said First Minister John Swinney had been briefed on security plans and was liaising with UK counterparts.

The planned trip comes ahead of a full UK state visit later this year, expected in September. Buckingham Palace confirmed that King Charles has extended an invitation to Trump and the First Lady, with planning discussions already underway. Traditionally, second-term US presidents are not given state visits, making this a notable exception.

The new course is being positioned as both a tourism asset and a potential economic driver for the region, with Trump International describing it as “one of the most environmentally friendly and sustainable” courses ever built.
