Popular George Street farmers’ sustainability market to return

The George Street Farmers’ Market will return on Saturday, September 1, from 10am – 4pm as plans are confirmed for the event to become a permanent fixture on the first Saturday of every month.

Organised by Greater George Street Traders’ Association, the market will showcase a wide range of produce from local suppliers, bakers, growers and more. The market is a great opportunity for individuals to taste great local produce and buy from some of the best producers in the North-east.

The market in July was supported by 14 local organisations including CFINE, One Seed Forward, Aberdeen Climate Action and The Allotment Market Stall.

The public turned out in their thousands to support the inaugural sustainability market in July, with stall holders and local businesses all reporting excellent sales and a noticeable increase in footfall. The event page on social media platform Facebook, boasted over 60,000 hits.

The funding for the market was achieved through a grant application to the recent Aberdeen City Council UDecide fund. Match funding was provided by Aberdeen Inspired.

Geoff Cooper, city centre manager at Aberdeen Inspired commented said: “The first ever George St Farmers’ market was a great success. All of the stall holders reported brisk trade on the day and just as pleasing was the feedback from local retailers on how much extra footfall and sales were generated by the market”.

Stuart Milne, chair of The George Street Traders Association was delighted with the first market: “To see this part of George Street with so many people having such a great time took me back to the days when George Street was a bustling shopping street. We look forward to the next market and creating an event for everyone to enjoy”.

Aberdeen Inspired is the banner under which the Aberdeen City Centre BID operates. It is a business-led initiative within the city centre in which levy payers within the BID zone contribute. Proceeds are used to fund projects designed to improve the business district.
