QHSE ABERDEEN is proud to announce its collaboration with Sumitomo Electric U.K. Power Cables (SEUK-CL) on the development and implementation of a bespoke ISO 9001 Quality Management System (QMS) for the company’s new submarine power cable manufacturing facility at the Port of Nigg.

Earlier this week, Angela Scott and Dave Rusling, Directors of QHSE ABERDEEN, were delighted to visit the Nigg site alongside Sumitomo’s QA General Manager. The visit provided valuable insight into how this major infrastructure project is taking shape and how QHSE ABERDEEN’s tailored ISO 9001 development project will become an integral part of the impressive facility as it continues to progress over the next 18 months.

“We are extremely grateful to have been shown around the facility and to see first-hand how this transformative project is evolving,” said Angela Scott. “It’s a privilege for an SME like ours to contribute to such a significant investment in the UK’s energy infrastructure. Each project we take on is bespoke, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Every organisation and every site demands a quality system that is fit for purpose, practical, and adds real value.”

The Port of Nigg development, spearheaded by Sumitomo Electric, is one of the most exciting manufacturing projects currently underway in the UK energy supply chain. The facility will produce high-voltage submarine power cables, a crucial component in supporting offshore wind and grid interconnection growth across Europe and beyond.

QHSE ABERDEEN’s scope includes designing and embedding a comprehensive ISO 9001 QMS that aligns seamlessly with Sumitomo’s global standards while being specifically adapted to the Nigg site’s operational structure.

The system will focus on:

  • Process control and assurance from initial construction through to production
  • Supplier management and traceability
  • Data-driven performance metrics for continuous improvement

QHSE ABERDEEN will also collaborate closely with Sumitomo’s HSE Manager to ensure the new Quality Management System integrates effectively with health, safety, and environmental processes, creating a unified and efficient management approach across the site.

In addition, QHSE ABERDEEN’s training division will support Sumitomo’s future staff development through its accredited ISO Auditor Courses, designed to build internal auditing competence, enhance understanding of ISO standards, and promote a culture of continual improvement within the organisation.

With extensive experience in implementing management systems across high-risk and technical industries, QHSE ABERDEEN brings the agility, focus, and depth of knowledge that an SME can offer while maintaining the rigorous standards expected by international corporations.

“Seeing this project in motion reinforces why partnership between SMEs and global leaders works,” added Dave Rusling. “Our size means we can respond quickly and tailor solutions exactly to client needs, while maintaining the integrity of international quality standards.”

The visit marks the start of an exciting phase for both teams as they work collaboratively to ensure that quality, safety, and continual improvement are built into every layer of the new operation at Nigg.
