More than 100 Labour MPs are to set out a proposal to block the government's planned changes to the benefits system.

A group of rebel MPs reportedly met on Monday night to sign an amendment that would give them an opportunity to reject the entire bill.

Dozens of Labour MPs have expressed concerns about plans to cut disability and sickness-related benefit payments to save £5billion a year.

The welfare reform bill will include proposals to make it harder for disabled people with less severe conditions to claim personal independence payment (Pip).

Liz Kendall, the work and pensions secretary, said there was “no route to social justice based on greater benefit spending alone” and pointed to a £1billion increase in back-to-work support.

Up to a dozen ministers are understood to have privately warned they will resign over the changes, however the chancellor insisted that “there will be no U-turn”, saying: “We will be voting on it next week.”
