Pupils from several primary schools in Aberdeen are to get a pizza-the-action as part of a Fascination of Plants Day.
Organised by Robert Gordon University (RGU) and held at the City Council’s Duthie Park Winter Gardens, the event is being held to mark the world-wide Fascination of Plants Day which aims to engage children with science.
The Aberdeen event, which is taking place on Thursday May 18, will involve about 100 youngsters who will participate in sessions including the science of pizza, extracting DNA from strawberries, making perfumes, and a Duthie Park trail.
RGU lecturers will lead the first three sessions, with the Duthie Park Rangers undertaking the trail.
Dr Morag McFadyen and Dr Myra MacKenzie, from RGU’s School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences, have been working to organise the event.
Dr McFadyen said: “The Fascination of Plants Day is part of a global initiative to celebrate the role of plants in all aspects of life.
“We are proud to play our part at RGU and look forward to offering a hands-on opportunity for pupils to discover more about the plant products they come across every day without realising it.”
A spokeswoman from Aberdeen City Council said: “The event will be a great way to show youngsters not only the science of nature, but also how everyday objects and places are full of interesting science.
“Duthie Park’s Winter Gardens are a great place year-round to discover the huge array of plants we have from the different zones around the world, whether you’re interested from a scientific or gardening perspective or just want to go somewhere peaceful.”
