RGU’s fashionable combination of charity, creativity and culture

First year students studying Fashion Management, Events Management and Public Relations at Robert Gordon University’s (RGU) School of Cultural and Creative Business have collaborated on a fashion exhibition.

The exhibitions has helped the students develop their skills while promoting and supporting local charities.

Ten teams were each given £10 to spend on a garment from a designated charity shop in the city. They then had to develop a film or book-themed showcase centred on that garment which would also promote the work of their assigned charity.

The results of their work will go on show at a Charity Fashion Exhibition: A Celebration of Creativity & Culture which will be launched on Wednesday April 12 in the atrium of the School at the Garthdee campus. At the launch event there will be the opportunity to purchase the garments, which have been styled to fit the theme, through a silent auction as well as home bakes and refreshments provided by the students. The exhibition will continue for two weeks.

The themes created by the students include “Fam Fatale” which combines the glamour of the Great Gatsby with Oxfam’s work to support women; “Breakfast at Barnardo’s” and Beetlejuice showcase which promotes the work of Shelter.

The event promotes the diversity of RGU’s recently-established School of Creative and Culture Business in which student collaboration in the form of live student-led projects is key. It also aims to promote the fact that charity shops are credible outlets for fashionable clothing and provide an interesting alternative to conventional high street outlets.

Funds raised through the silent auction will be donated to the charities and unsold garments will be returned to the charity shops. Charities involved are: Cancer Research; Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland; CLAN; Oxfam; Stella’s Voice; PDSA, Save the Children, Shelter, Sue Ryder Care; Barnardo’s.
