Aberdeen’s neonatal charity is appealing for runners to take on the New York City Marathon to raise money for local babies born too sick or too soon.

Friends of the Special Nursery (FOTSN) is the official charity of the 40-bed neonatal unit at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital, and raises funds to provide vital equipment and items not available through the NHS. This includes specialist medical equipment, soft sheets and bedding designed not to irritate delicate skin, and clothing sized for premature babies.

The charity has secured a limited number of spaces to take part in the 26.2 mile run, which takes place on Sunday, November 11.

Katie Watters, head of fundraising for FOTSN, said: “We are incredibly excited to be taking part in this year’s event. We have had some amazing runners take on marathons for us in the past, but this is the first time we’ve had the opportunity to enter a larger team to such a well-known event.

“We’ve already had several companies interest in entering corporate teams to the event, either as a single challenge or as part of their wider Charity of the Year fundraising, and we would be delighted to hear from any other organisations who want to get involved.”

The New York City Marathon starts on Staten Island before crossing the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge into Brooklyn. Runners then head north travelling through Queens, Manhattan and The Bronx before finishing in the spectacular Central Park.

Any organisations interested in entering a corporate team can contact katie@specialnursery.org for more details.
