More households across Scotland are receiving urgent support with their energy costs through the Scarf Fuel Fund, which offers energy vouchers to people at risk of running out of credit on their prepayment meters.

The fund, which has already delivered over £400,000 of support to households in need, is open to referrals from a growing network of more than 60 partners – including housing associations, charities, local authorities, and businesses.

Eligible households can receive up to £294 per year in the form of six energy vouchers worth £49 each. The fund is specifically aimed at people who:

  • Use a prepayment meter
  • Are at risk of self-disconnection due to lack of credit
  • Can demonstrate financial hardship

Approved partners help to verify client eligibility. Once a referral is made, Scarf manages the full application and delivery process to ensure a rapid response with minimal administrative burden on frontline organisations.

Organisations within Scarf’s delivery areas can refer households directly and Scarf will handle all steps. Those outside the service area can register as referral partners and begin supporting clients almost immediately. It offers a great way for organisations to bring another source of help to their clients without affecting their budgets.

Lawrence Johnston, co-CEO at Scarf said: “This fund is designed to get help to as many people as possible. When someone can’t afford to top up their meter, it affects everything from cooking meals to washing their clothes. We’ve made it easy to integrate the Scarf Fuel Fund into existing support services, and thanks to our referral partners, we’re reaching the people who need this most.”
