On 27th May at 1.30pm a diverse programme of music pieces from ‘From Baroque to Pop’ will entertain Primary Five and Six pupils from city schools.

Last September musical pupils from Dyce Academy Music School gave a highly successful jazz performance for new university students as part of ‘welcome week.’ This encouraged Katherine Williams, education officer at St Machar’s Cathedral to extend her educational programmes to encompass music. She has invited the talented students, under the direction of Kevin Kyle to perform to primary aged pupils.

“To give young children the opportunity to hear a variety of instruments and voices in the honeyed acoustics of St Machar’s Cathedral should be very inspiring. Hopefully, it will encourage children to learn an instrument and appreciate live music,” she said.

The Cathedral has a long tradition of high-quality music-making with a fine Father Willis organ and choir that sing weekly. The Kirk Session is supporting school outreach activities by employing a part time Education Officer to deliver a wide range of experiences to young people. Last year over 1500 children from both Secondary and Primary schools attended the Cathedral to explore its ancient history. They have taken part in interactive tours, quizzes and crafts and learning to support nature in the award-winning Biodiversity Project in the kirkyard.

The concert is free and open to the public to attend. No tickets needed. School or group bookings should email Katherine on education@stmachar.com
