Claire Coutinho has used her speech at the Conservative party conference to vow to slash energy bills by ditching "rip-off wind subsidies" and climate laws.

The shadow energy secretary doubled down on the party's pivot away from the green energy and climate commitments it previously endorsed while in power.

If elected, the Tories are now promising to abolish the post-Brexit carbon pricing system which had been adopted as part of Boris Johnson's plan to reach net zero.

The party also vows to remove renewable energy subsidies by bringing an early end to Ed Miliband's 20-year green energy certificates, the BBC reports.

The scheme is presently due to run until 2037.

Coutinho argues axing the two schemes would save the average household £165 on its energy bill.

It comes as energy bills look to be a key battleground for the next election, with major parties all promising to save families money.

Labour claims its plan to decarbonise electricity will slash bills by £300 a year, while Reform UK maintains ending the "net zero madness" will reduce bills by £1,000.
