In response to growing national concern about the declining interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) among young people, Touch of Love Outreach recently organised a trip to Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh
For many of these young people, particularly New Scots, this was their first time leaving the borders of Aberdeen. The experience was not just a journey in miles - it was a journey into discovery, curiosity, and inspiration.
At Dynamic Earth, the young people explored hands-on exhibits, took part in interactive displays, and were captivated by a full-dome planetarium show that sparked conversations about moon landings, extinct species, and the vastness of the universe. They saw, touched and engaged in a way that raised their curiosity. As one young person shared: “I didn’t know science could be this exciting!”
Recent findings from the Science Education Tracker, published by the Royal Society and EngineeringUK, which reported a decline in young people’s interest and confidence in science and computing. The study cited limited hands-on learning, reduced access to role models, and a lack of STEM-based work experience - especially for girls and underrepresented groups.
Touch of Love believes experiences like these are essential to ignite passion and shape future ambitions.
“This journey wasn’t just about visiting a science centre,” said Jane Akadiri, founder of Touch of Love. “It was about opening doors - to new ideas, to possibility, to self-belief. We wanted to create a moment of discovery and inspiration for young people, especially those who haven’t had access to such opportunities before. Watching their excitement, their questions, and the way they lit up in that planetarium—it confirmed that moments like this matter.”
As the coach journeyed back to Aberdeen, the young people chatted animatedly about their favourite moments - from seeing 3D projections of space missions to touching real meteorite fragments and learning about prehistoric life. It was a memory they’ll carry into their future studies and career choices.
Touch of Love is now reaching out to local businesses and STEM-based organisations. If your company can offer a day visit, mentorship, or short internship placement related to STEM, these real-world experiences can make a lasting impact on young minds.
Opportunities to observe or take part in hands-on STEM tasks are vital to deepening interest and guiding career aspirations.
