Two lots of tribal art from Fiji, Tonga and the Polynesian Austral Islands sold for a record high of £46,500, after going under the hammer at Elgin Auction Centre on Wednesday August 23.
Selling to online buyers from Switzerland and France, the first lot of two wooden clubs from Fiji and Tonga sold for £19,000, with the second lot of four wooden spears and paddles from the Polynesian Austral Islands selling for £27,500.
The auction included a private collection of almost 600 lots belonging to the late Norman Robertson of Netherton Farm, comprising small items such as clocks, china, prints, paintings and whisky. An earlier sale of Mr Robertson’s antique furniture saw a top price of £7,200 for an electric master clock.
Gordon Pirie, manager at Elgin Auction Centre, said: “Mr Robertson was very well known in the farming community and enjoyed travelling the length and breadth of the country. His collection contained some truly fantastic items but we were all amazed by the remarkable top prices achieved for the tribal art.
“Smaller items such as these, as well as jewellery, silver and gold, are selling particularly well at auction at the moment and overall there were approximately 100 lots sold online.
