Union Terrace Gardens regeneration has been shortlisted for Scotland’s top architecture prize.
The transformed city-centre park in Aberdeen is one of four projects in the running for the Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award, organised by the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS).
Led by Glasgow-based Stallan Brand in collaboration with London’s LDA Design, the regeneration has reimagined Union Terrace Gardens as a welcoming civic destination.
The project introduced three pavilion-style buildings housing a café, restaurant and wine bar, while carefully restoring historic features such as statues, railings, arcade arches and underground Victorian toilets.
The redesign also enhanced the green spaces, improving accessibility and usability for the public year-round.
Since its launch in 2002, the Andrew Doolan Award has celebrated outstanding architectural contributions in Scotland, honouring the late designer.
This year’s jury praised projects that demonstrate how architecture can work hand in hand with other built environment disciplines, including landscape and urban design.
Alongside Union Terrace Gardens, the shortlist includes the Gairnshiel Jubilee Bridge in Aberdeenshire, a 16th century tower in the Highlands and a new teaching hub at the University of Edinburgh.
