Tymor Marine trials MOSIS stability system on board Serco NorthLink’s Aberdeen based ferries

Tymor Marine, recently collaborated with Northern Isles ferry operator NorthLink to trial its MOSIS stability system (Measurement of Stability in Service) on board one of NorthLink’s Aberdeen based ferries, MV Hrossey.

Tymor Marine recognises the benefits MOSIS can bring to the wider marine industry, including the cruise, car carrier and defence sectors. The NorthLink partnership follows a series of MOSIS tests which took place on an Irish naval vessel whilst in dock in Haulbowline Co. Cork to determine the stability prior to deployment to the Mediterranean to rescue migrants.

The Tymor team, led by technical Director Prof Colin MacFarlane, travelled overnight to Shetland on the MV Hrossey. On arrival, Tymor worked with the crew to carry out several MOSIS tests followed by further experiments as the vessel departed Shetland and got underway. The effects the vessel motion and roll reduction stabilisers have on the results will be determined as the data is analysed.

Tymor’s MOSIS system is a proven and accepted method within the oil and gas industry for determining the centre of gravity (VCG) of a floating vessel when it is in service. It mimics a traditional and costly inclining experiment, typically undertaken when the vessel is out of service which impacts its revenue earning potential. With MOSIS, tests are undertaken while the vessel is in-service, minimising downtime, and allowing the ship operator to monitor and manage their vessels stability on an ongoing basis.

Kevin Moran, managing director of Tymor Marine, said “We are excited to collaborate with NorthLink as we expand the application of MOSIS technology to vessels outside of the energy sector. The result of the trial will provide us with invaluable data and marks a significant step forward in our ambition to bring the benefits of MOSIS technology to the marine industry with the potential to generate in excess of $30 million in revenue over the next ten years. Having the vessel on our doorstep coupled with the support from the NorthLink’s management provides us with a fantastic opportunity”.

Captain Stuart McCallum, marine manager at Serco NorthLink, said “Serco NorthLink is delighted to be working with Tymor Marine on the trial of its MOSIS stability system for conventional vessels. MOSIS has clear operational and safety benefits and we look forward to the seeing the results of the tests”.
