Well-known union boss Mick Lynch has announced his retirement as the head of RMT.
The 63-year-old became the general secretary of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers in 2021.
During his time at the helm, the union staged a number of strikes over pay in 2022 and 2023 before striking a deal with the new Labour government last summer.
A high-profile figure, Mr Lynch was famed and respected for his no-nonsense, straight-talking style, but also drew criticism for his £84,000 salary and the widespread disruption caused by his union's strikes.
He is set to stay in the position until RMT members elect a replacement in May.
The BBC reports Mr Lynch said it had "been a privilege" to serve RMT and its members, but that it was "time for change".
