Exports of Scottish salmon and Scotch whisky to the US fell sharply at the start of the year as the impact of Donald Trump's tariffs weighed on demand.

New figures from the Food and Drink Federation show food and drink exports to the US fell 28% to £529.6 million in the first quarter, with Scottish salmon exports almost halving and whisky shipments down by a quarter.

Overall UK food and drink exports fell 4.8% to £5.7bn during the three months to March, the lowest level for a decade excluding the pandemic.

Balwinder Dhoot, the FDF's director of sustainability and growth, said: "The numbers are not great. It's the third lowest level of exports we've seen since 2000. This is quite a significant drop."

He added: "If your product is more expensive, it's less attractive."

Trade body Salmon Scotland said the decline partly reflected seasonal buying patterns around Easter, Ramadan and Chinese New Year, while the Scotch Whisky Association welcomed the recent removal of US tariffs on British spirits, describing it as "a significant boost" for the sector.
