SAMH (Scottish Action for Mental Health) is hosting a dog-friendly, community health walk to help promote the benefits of physical activity and social connection for our wellbeing.

‘Walkies for Wellbeing’ will take place at Aberdeen’s Hazlehead Park, with each participant receiving a free doggy bag filled with treats for their canine companions and information about local mental health services.

This free health walk takes place on Saturday 30 August at 10am and is open to dog-owners and dog-lovers alike. The event is sponsored by local Aberdeen business Sophie’s Pawtique and Spa, and further supported by businesses including Aberdeenshire healthcare clinic icpc Health.

Colin Davidson, Co-Director of icpc Health, got involved after his dog Hudson helped support his mental health.

He said: "Two words can sum up having a dog and how it positively affects your mental health - unconditional love. Every morning you are met with a bundle of energy that wiggles and jiggles to greet you. No matter how I am feeling, it's always ace to see our dog Hudson."

Amanda Barclay-Black, Practice Manager at icpc Health, shares the positive physical effect of having her dog Hector.

She said: “When we got our Border Terrier, Hector, 6 years ago, I had no idea of how strong the bond would become between us. He’s such an important part of the family, and I’m definitely fitter and more active than I would be without a dog.”

The event is free to attend but booking a ticket is essential, due to restrictions on the number of walkers we can welcome. Participants can sign-up for Walkies for Wellbeing via Eventbrite.

SAMH recently announced The Nook, Scotland’s first ever network of walk-in mental health support hubs, with an Aberdeen Nook set to launch in 2026. The Nook will provide barrier-free access to mental health support, giving people help fast with no waiting lists or need to book an appointment. Learn more about The Nook.
