We’re looking forward to some genuinely useful discussions.” — David Jamieson, Founder, Salus Technical

Public lecture to explore Aberdeen’s geothermal future

May 5

The University of Aberdeen will host a public lecture exploring the future of geothermal energy in the city.

Delivered in partnership with the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE) Local Chapter Aberdeen, the event will focus on the Aberdeen Geothermal Feasibility Pilot (AGFP), a University‑based research initiative looking at whether the geothermal heat beneath our feet could be used as a reliable, low‑carbon source of energy.

The lecture will take place on Tuesday 5 May at 6pm in Meston Lecture Theatre 1 on the University’s King's College campus, Old Aberdeen. The event is free to attend, open to the public and aims to increase awareness and understanding of geothermal energy and its potential role in Aberdeen’s transition to low‑carbon heating.

The AGFP brings together researchers, public bodies and industry partners to build the scientific evidence base needed to de‑risk future geothermal investment.

The project includes plans to drill a deep, instrumented research borehole on the University campus, alongside the development of a detailed 3D geological and temperature model of the subsurface beneath the city. By combining borehole data, seismic measurements and geological modelling, AGFP aims to better understand how heat flows through the rocks beneath Aberdeen and where geothermal resources may be most effectively accessed.

AGFP is also focused on openness and impact. Data generated by the project will be made openly available, supporting wider research and helping other cities assess their own geothermal potential, while contributing to Aberdeen’s net‑zero ambitions and just energy transition.

Dr Dave Cornwell, project co-lead and senior lecturer at the University’s School of Geosciences, said: “Geothermal energy has the potential to provide clean, dependable heat exactly where it is needed, but understanding what lies beneath our feet is crucial. This public lecture, delivered in partnership with EAGE, is an important opportunity to share our work with the wider community, discuss what we are learning so far, and explore how geothermal heat could play a role in Aberdeen’s future energy system.

“A key part of the feasibility pilot is engagement – not just with industry and policymakers, but with the people who live and work in the city. Events like this help demystify geothermal energy and show how world‑class research at the University of Aberdeen can directly support local solutions to global challenges.”

More information and details of how to register to attend the lecture can be found here.

The informal event will offer an opportunity for guests to meet the team and volunteers behind Somebody Cares, tour the charity's facilities and gain a deeper understanding of the practical support and community connection it provides year-round.

Operations’ head, Alison Topley, explains, "The support we receive from local residents and the business community is incredible. But the need in our community is ongoing – our work continues all year round, and it is only possible thanks to the dedication of our volunteers and the support of local partners. We would love to see more businesses get involved. Working with Somebody Cares is a meaningful way for companies to support their local community while also contributing to their environmental and corporate social responsibility goals."

Businesses attending the event will learn more about the different ways organisations can partner with Somebody Cares, from volunteering and team engagement opportunities to fundraising initiatives and longer-term collaborations that help strengthen support for those who need it most.

The open morning will take place at Royfold House, Hill of Rubislaw, offering guests a chance to tour the facilities, learn more about the charity's incredible impact and meet the people behind the work.

Whether attending out of curiosity, interest in community partnership or a desire to support local initiatives, the Somebody Cares team looks forward to welcoming members of Aberdeen's business community and beginning new conversations about how care and community can work hand in hand.

University of Aberdeen to host prestigious RV Jones Lecture

May 27

The University of Aberdeen will host the distinguished RV Jones Lecture at its King’s College campus next month.

The lecture, named after scientist and scientific military intelligence expert R. V. Jones, is an annual series of lectures given by renowned engineers and scientists. It will take place on 27 May at King’s College Conference Centre.

The 2026 lecture will be delivered by Professor Timothy Leighton FREng FRS, Executive General Director and Inventor-in-Chief of Sloan Water Technology. It will explore the impact of bubble acoustics on climate change, spaceships, dolphins and the antibiotic apocalypse.

Small air-filled bubbles, submerged in water, are thought to be one of the most powerful objects in the natural world when it comes to interacting with sound fields. Their ability to generate sound when trapped under waterfalls or breaking ocean waves has allowed experts to quantify key parameters required for forecasting climate change, and for predicting how other worlds will sound. Their ability to scatter sound has also been used by whales and dolphins to hunt.

Today, scientists have learned to utilise the sound to make such bubbles dance on the surface of incurable or difficult-to-heal wounds, to offer a cure that requires no antibiotics and therefore does not fuel the oncoming “antibiotic apocalypse”.

Professor Leighton’s lecture will delve into the fascinating topic of bubble acoustics and the impact it has on the world around us. As a physicist and inventor, Professor Leighton’s research on the acoustical physics of bubbles has made notable contributions to diverse fields in industry, medicine, oceanography and the environment.

He is Honorary Professor of University College London, Honorary Fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge University, and Emeritus Professor of the University of Southampton. He is a Fellow of three national academies and has been awarded eight international medals and seven international prizes. In 2006, on awarding him their Paterson medal, the UK Institute of Physics described him as a ‘world leader in four fields’.

The lectures, organised by the University’s School of Engineering, are intended to increase the public’s understanding of science in its broadest sense and to stimulate predominantly the academic and business community of the north-east of Scotland.

The lecture series recognises R. V. Jones who played a critical role in the defence of Britain during the Second World War. After the war he joined the University of Aberdeen as Chair of Natural Philosophy, which he held until his retirement in 1981.

Professor Marian Wiercigroch, Sixth Century Chair in Applied Dynamic at the University of Aberdeen and Lecture series convener, said: “We are delighted to host Professor Timothy Leighton FREng FRS, a world leading authority in underwater acoustics, who translated fundamental science to wide ranging practical applications.”

Lombard Rally Festival

June 11-14

Brechin Castle welcomes North East Scotland’s first Lombard Rally Festival for historic rally cars on June 13th and 14th as part of a fund-raising weekend for the Scottish Air Ambulance.

Starting on June 11th with a Golf Day at nearby Edzell Golf Club – combining golf and amazing historic rally cars demonstrated on a specially constructed period style rally stage at the Castle.

The series of Lombard Rally Festivals reflects the growing interest in historic rally cars, from the 1960s right through until twenty years ago, many of which can not be rallied competitively today due to their value, impossibility of getting hold of new parts or changing regulations. These events, run all around the UK, are not competitive and give spectators the chance to see cars such as Audi Quattros, Lancias and Peugeot WRC up close between runs, talk to the drivers and experience the action without having to walk for miles through a forest to see them.

These events are inspired by the legendary around Britain Lombard RAC Rallies in the 1970s and 1980s, running over four or five days, which were the largest single spectator sporting event in the UK, attracting more spectators over their late November weekend than every Football League match put together – an extraordinary number, looking back.

Added to that, hero drivers from the past also attend, at Brechin Castle Harri Toivonen is expected from Finland, multi time German rally champion, Harald Demuth and the only man to win a forest international rally in the rallying icon, Lancia Stratos, Andy Dawson, will be on site to tell stories of past successes and drive period cars, amongst others.

Running over two days, on Saturday evening an informal dinner will take place, with Andy Dawson recounting stories of rallying all over the World. Hospitality tickets will be available for the evening being held at Edzell Golf Club.

On the previous Thursday, Edzell Golf Club will also play host to the Scottish Air Ambulance Golf Day, with a shotgun start at 11.00am. Proceeds from the day, along with some motorsport items auctioned by Harri Toivonen in the evening, will go to the Air Ambulance Charity. It will be possible to buy passenger rides with the Hero Drivers and an Audi Quattro S1E2, amongst others – don’t miss out on the chance to support this important charity serving the North of Scotland.

If you like the idea of getting involved Lombard Rally Festivals offer a variety of ways. Firstly, they offer historic rally cars available to hire – Nissan Sunny or Ford Escort – with which it is possible to add tuition by a former World Champion driver, should you wish to drive in the event. Various hospitality options are available to bring clients along to experience something they will not have seen before, with even rides in a historic rally car to add to their experience.

In addition to the rally car action, a small display of classic and sports cars will be available, outside the Castle.

With the projected arrival in Aberdeen in 2027 of a round of the World Rally Championship, what a warmup act  Lombard Rally Festival Brechin Castle will be in June.

Tee off after dark at Clan’s new Night Golf event

October 29

The fairways of Newmachar Golf Course will be illuminated for a special nighttime golf event this year, with golfers encouraged to tee off after dark and raise money for Clan Cancer Support.

The charity will host its first ever Night Golf event on Thursday, October 29 at Newmachar Golf Course with limited team spots now available for booking.

Golfers will play six holes on the club’s Swailend course, designed by the world-renowned Golf Architect, Dave Thomas.

The holes, fairways and balls will be illuminated during the event to provide a unique experience for golf enthusiasts of all abilities.

Graham Gordon, golf operations at Newmachar Golf Course, said: “Whether you are a seasoned player or looking for a friendly team challenge, this new event is a brilliant way to enjoy the sport in a unique way, all while supporting Clan to help more local people impacted by cancer in your community.”

As well as taking on the course in the dark, golfers will also have access to a practice area and the opportunity to compete in hole in one and longest drive competitions.

Spaces are limited and cost £300 for a team of four which includes six holes of golf and a beer and a burger in the Clubhouse afterwards.

Various sponsorship opportunities are available for local companies looking to support the event with packages available from £250 for hole sponsorship.

Fiona Fernie, chief executive of Clan Cancer Support, said: “We’ve wanted to organise a golf event with a difference for quite some time now and our Night Golf at Newmachar Golf Club promises to be a fun challenge for golfers of all handicaps.

“We’d urge players to book their teams now as spaces are limited and would ask any local businesses who want to get involved to contact us directly so we can ensure they don’t miss out on the opportunity to get their brand recognised at this new event.”

Clan Cancer Support is the largest, independent cancer support charity in the north of Scotland and provides emotional and physical support to anyone impacted by a cancer diagnosis, including the individual, their family, carers and friends.

The charity provides free professional counselling, complementary therapies, health and wellbeing activities, information and dedicated support for children and families across north-east Scotland, Moray, Orkney and Shetland.

Clan’s Night Golf event will take place from 5pm on Thursday, October 29 at Newmachar Golf Club. Tickets cost £75 for individuals and £300 for a team of four. Each booking includes access to the driving range, a round of six holes and a beer and burger in the Clubhouse.
