Energy sector leader Doug Duguid to deliver University of Aberdeen's 2026 Watt Hepburn Lecture

Wednesday June 17

Entrepreneur and energy industry leader Doug Duguid will share lessons from more than four decades of building and leading international businesses when he delivers the University of Aberdeen's annual Watt Hepburn Lecture next week.

Mr Duguid, Chief Executive Officer of Aurora Energy Services and Indigo 7 Ventures, will present a keynote address titled On the Edge – not in the Hedge! Leadership and Managing Risk in a Fast-Growing Business and Changing Energy Landscape at the University of Aberdeen on Wednesday 17 June.

Drawing on a career that has taken him from mechanical fitter to the CEO of three international service companies, Mr Duguid will offer an experience-led perspective on entrepreneurship, leadership and decision-making in a rapidly evolving energy sector.

The lecture will explore what it takes to build and grow successful businesses, why risk is an unavoidable part of leadership, and how resilience, instinct and strong teams can help organisations navigate uncertainty and seize new opportunities.

As CEO of Aurora Energy Services, Mr Duguid leads an international business supporting the global energy sector and helping drive the transition towards a more sustainable energy future through expanded services in lower-carbon energy markets.

He is also CEO of Indigo 7 Ventures, a family investment company that supports early-stage businesses to overcome challenges, avoid common pitfalls and scale successfully.

Mr Duguid previously founded and led EnerMech, growing the company into an international business operating in 23 countries, employing around 4,000 people and generating annual revenues of more than £400 million. Earlier in his career, he led the management buyout of PSL Energy Services, growing the company from a £20 million UK operation into a £110 million international business before its sale to Halliburton.

The Watt Hepburn Lecture is organised by the University of Aberdeen Business School and supported by the University of Aberdeen Development Trust SCIO. Established in 2012 through a donation from Aberdeen graduate Ann Sants, the lecture series honours her father, William Watt Hepburn, a prominent Aberdeen businessman and one of the most successful entrepreneurs of his generation.

The lecture takes place at the Auditorium, Kings College Conference Centre, University of Aberdeen, on Wednesday 17 June. Registration opens at 5pm, followed by a networking reception before the lecture begins at 6pm.

University of Aberdeen Watt Hepburn Lecture 2026

Wednesday June 17

The University of Aberdeen invites you to this year’s annual Watt Hepburn Lecture, delivered by energy sector leader, Doug Duguid.

On the Edge – not in the Hedge! Leadership and Managing Risk in a Fast-Growing Business and Changing Energy Landscape

A straight-talking view on what it really takes to build and grow successful service businesses in the energy sector.

In this keynote, Doug Duguid, CEO of Aurora Energy Services and Indigo 7 Ventures, shares an experience-led perspective on entrepreneurship, leadership, and decision-making.   Drawing on a career spanning more than four decades — from mechanical fitter to CEO of three different international service companies — he challenges over reliance on conventional business management techniques, and highlights the importance of taking risks, action, resilience, and instinct in business success.

Through real-world examples of growth, risk, and leadership under pressure, Doug explores how opportunities are recognised and acted upon, why risk is unavoidable, and how strong teams underpin enduring businesses.

SOBR to hold first ever cheese and wine tasting event

Thursday June 18

Aberdeen’s SOBR bar, recently listed in i News Top 30 Days Out for Adults that don’t involve drinking, has announced that it will hold its first ever Wine and Cheese Tasting event.

Taking place on Thursday 18 June, between 7-9pm, the event will see SOBR collaborate with fellow local businesses in the Granite City, namely Aberdeen Local Wine School, a local, independently owned wine education and events company, and Kathryn Figueiredo of The Gourmet Cheese Company, whose cheese shop in Rosemount has a strong following.

Aberdeen Local Wine School will bring a top-class selection of alcohol-free wines to SOBR, with Kathryn pairing them with her artisan cheeses for those attending to try.

SOBR customers are already used to a choice of rotating seasonal snacks with their drinks, with the alcohol-free bar and events space offering nibbles from local foodie businesses in and around Thistle Street, and beyond. It has already collaborated with The Gourmet Cheese Company before, having held several popular “Cheese Weeks” in the past.

“We know that many of our customers love Kathryn’s cheese, but this event is the first time that we have held an official Wine and Cheese Tasting event, a fact we are all very excited about,” said Kate Kenyon, SOBR Bar owner.

“Anna [from Aberdeen Local Wine School] is incredibly knowledgeable and has a great reputation in the city for her expertise,” continued Kate. “We have been very impressed with the variety and quality of alcohol-free wines she can bring for our guests to taste and learn about. Expect this evening to surprise your tastebuds, challenge your expectations and, ultimately, prove that wine nights don’t need alcohol to be great!

“We couldn’t have chosen two better local businesses to work with on this evening than the Aberdeen Local Wine School and The Gourmet Cheese Company, both experts in their field,” she said. “Kathryn’s delicious cheeses are also big favourites here at SOBR. Our thanks to her for the care and attentions she takes in her sourcing.”

Commenting from Aberdeen Local Wine School, a business which offers private tastings, hosts its own events, and offers professional WSET qualifications in Wine, Anna Ferrier, Owner and Chief Wine Tutorsaid: “I’m very excited for this first collaboration with the team at SOBR. There is more and more demand for alcohol-free options and it’s very exciting to work with Kate and her team - SOBR has been such a great addition to the city and I’m very honoured that they have chosen to work with me. It’s been lots of fun finding some great options for the tasting and I can’t wait to share it with everyone.”

SOBR’s Wine and Cheese Tasting event in June will be part of the bar’s six month anniversary celebrations, heating up nicely with the unexpected, but very welcome, accolade of i news listing SOBR in its Top 30 Days Out for Adults that don’t involve drinking. The bar is also through to the next round in the Great British Pub Awards, Best Community Pub 2026.

Tickets for SOBR’ s Cheese & Wine Evening are available at £42 per person. Book here.

The Magic of the Mind to amaze with an evening of science, illusion and discovery

Thursday June 18

Psychologists, neuroscientists, engineers and magicians will join forces at Aberdeen Art Gallery on Thursday 18 June for The Magic of the Mind, a free public event exploring the mysteries of the human mind.

The event is the flagship event of a year-long programme celebrating the 130th anniversary of the School of Psychology at the University of Aberdeen. Founded in 1896, Aberdeen is home to the oldest psychology department in the UK.

In collaboration with the Institute of Medical Sciences, the School of Engineering and the Aberdeen Magical Society, The Magic of the Mind will bring together more than 60 researchers, students and performers for one of the largest public engagement events ever organised by the University of Aberdeen.

Highlights include:

  • Live magic performances throughout the evening by the Aberdeen Magical Society, which is also celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.
  • Interactive robots from the School of Engineering, including robots with distinct personalities and technologies developed to support stroke rehabilitation.
  • Immersive virtual reality experiences that alter perception and sense of self.
  • Human-AI interactions that test whether you can spot-a-bot.
  • Hands-on Ouija board demonstrations revealing the psychological forces behind their seemingly supernatural movements.
  • Mind-bending visual illusions that make people appear to shrink, grow or defy perspective.
  • Live eyewitness identification experiments demonstrating how our memories can sometimes mislead us.
  • Real-time brain activity demonstrations (EEG) led by researchers from the Institute of Medical Sciences.

The event builds on the success of Illusion Night, a public engagement event held during the European Conference on Visual Perception in 2024, which attracted more than 1,600 visitors.

Professor Doug Martin, Head of the School of Psychology, said:

“The School of Psychology at the University of Aberdeen is the oldest in the UK and was the first in Scotland to have an experimental psychology laboratory. As we celebrate our 130-year anniversary, we wanted to bring our research out of the lab and into the heart of the city.

“The opportunity to collaborate with Aberdeen Magical Society, who are celebrating their centenary this year, was too good an opportunity to miss. We hope people of all ages will come along, get involved, and leave having discovered something surprising about the mind and perhaps about themselves too."

The Magic of the Mind is family friendly and free to attend, but advance booking is required.

Nimbus Blue to host "Ask the Hacker" live event in Aberdeen

Thursday June 25

Nimbus Blue, the Aberdeen-based IT support and cyber security firm, will host a live event on Thursday 25 June 2026, giving small business owners and leaders an unfiltered, plain-English look at how ethical hackers actually work and what their findings mean for everyday businesses.

Taking place at Neo House on Riverside Drive from 10:00 to 11:30, "Ask the Hacker - How Cyber Security is Tested and What the Real Risks Are for Your Business" will be hosted by Nimbus Blue founder David Tawse, alongside one of their specialist ethical hackers from the firm’s Nimbus Red network. The session is built around a live guided conversation and open Q&A, with no slide deck, no jargon, and no sales pitch.

The event reflects Nimbus Blue's wider belief that cyber security, IT, and penetration testing should not be treated in isolation, and that smaller businesses across the North-east deserve the same honest insight that larger organisations routinely receive. Attendees will hear how ethical hackers think, what a real penetration test involves, and where the genuine risks sit for a typical small business - from email and identity compromise through to operational disruption.

A central theme of the session will be helping attendees identify their "crown jewels": the data and systems their business genuinely could not operate without, and where those assets actually live. From there, the conversation will move into practical, low-effort actions business owners can take in the week following the event.

David Tawse, Founder of Nimbus Blue, said: "Cyber security is too often dressed up in jargon or used to scare people into buying something. That is not what this is. We want business owners in the North-east to leave with a clearer view of how attackers actually think, what their own crown jewels are, and one or two practical things they can do this week. No technical overwhelm, no sales pitch, just an honest conversation."

While the event is invite-only, a limited number of additional spaces have been reserved for business owners and leaders who would like to be considered for the conversation.

Cereal walk will showcase cutting-edge barley research from The James Hutton Institute

Tuesday July 7

The James Hutton Institute, Scotland’s pre-eminent interdisciplinary scientific research institute for the sustainable management of land, crop and nature resources, is hosting a cereal walk on Tuesday 7th July at its Balruddery Farm, near Dundee.

The farm is home to more than 5,000 field plots demonstrating the wide range of research projects that are part of the International Barley Hub (IBH) programme.

The International Barley Hub (IBH), hosted by the Hutton, promotes scientific discovery and innovation to future-proof barley, the predominant crop grown in Scotland.  It is part of a £62m investment through the Tay Cities Region Deal (TCRD) a partnership between local, Scottish and UK governments and the private, academic and voluntary sectors.

Dr Kelly Houston, Deputy Director of the IBH, said, “Our scientists are using genetic diversity to tackle the challenges faced by the barley industry.  Through our science we can support the barley supply chain, from breeders and growers to the Scottish malting and animal feed industry and play an important role in global food security.

“All the projects we will be showcasing aim to increase resilience to the changing climate and reduce barley’s carbon footprint.”

With climate change accelerating environmental pressures and global demand for barley continuing to rise, research into crop genetics, resilience and sustainability has never been more critical.

Tee off after dark at Clan’s new Night Golf event

October 29

The fairways of Newmachar Golf Course will be illuminated for a special nighttime golf event this year, with golfers encouraged to tee off after dark and raise money for Clan Cancer Support.

The charity will host its first ever Night Golf event on Thursday, October 29 at Newmachar Golf Course with limited team spots now available for booking.

Golfers will play six holes on the club’s Swailend course, designed by the world-renowned Golf Architect, Dave Thomas.

The holes, fairways and balls will be illuminated during the event to provide a unique experience for golf enthusiasts of all abilities.

Graham Gordon, golf operations at Newmachar Golf Course, said: “Whether you are a seasoned player or looking for a friendly team challenge, this new event is a brilliant way to enjoy the sport in a unique way, all while supporting Clan to help more local people impacted by cancer in your community.”

As well as taking on the course in the dark, golfers will also have access to a practice area and the opportunity to compete in hole in one and longest drive competitions.

Spaces are limited and cost £300 for a team of four which includes six holes of golf and a beer and a burger in the Clubhouse afterwards.

Various sponsorship opportunities are available for local companies looking to support the event with packages available from £250 for hole sponsorship.

Fiona Fernie, chief executive of Clan Cancer Support, said: “We’ve wanted to organise a golf event with a difference for quite some time now and our Night Golf at Newmachar Golf Club promises to be a fun challenge for golfers of all handicaps.

“We’d urge players to book their teams now as spaces are limited and would ask any local businesses who want to get involved to contact us directly so we can ensure they don’t miss out on the opportunity to get their brand recognised at this new event.”

Clan Cancer Support is the largest, independent cancer support charity in the north of Scotland and provides emotional and physical support to anyone impacted by a cancer diagnosis, including the individual, their family, carers and friends.

The charity provides free professional counselling, complementary therapies, health and wellbeing activities, information and dedicated support for children and families across north-east Scotland, Moray, Orkney and Shetland.

Clan’s Night Golf event will take place from 5pm on Thursday, October 29 at Newmachar Golf Club. Tickets cost £75 for individuals and £300 for a team of four. Each booking includes access to the driving range, a round of six holes and a beer and burger in the Clubhouse.
