Today is World Prematurity Day, an international day dedicated to raising awareness of preterm birth and the challenges faced by babies born early and their families.

Every year, around 15 million babies are born prematurely worldwide, which is approximately one in ten of all births. The day encourages understanding, support and improved care for families experiencing the uncertainty and worry that often comes with a premature birth.

This year’s theme - “Give preterm babies a strong start for a hopeful future” - highlights the importance of early, high-quality care and support.

In Aberdeen, Marischal College will be lit up purple this evening to mark the day and show support for neonatal families across the region.

The Archie Foundation supports around 1,000 babies and their families annually across NHS Grampian, Tayside and the Highlands. Over the years, the charity has helped provide specialist equipment, family support, counselling services and enhancements to neonatal care, and is currently midway through a £2million appeal to deliver the difference at the new Baird Family Hospital.

The Foundation is also inviting people to take part in its Prematuri-Tea campaign by hosting an afternoon tea or coffee morning during November to help raise funds for neonatal services and show solidarity with families affected by prematurity.
