CLAN's sensory garden
CLAN Cancer Support, which is based on Westburn Road, Aberdeen, won an Aberdeen in Bloom Garden award for the third year in a row.
The competition rewards and showcases Aberdeen’s residents and businesses for their contribution to the city’s floral display.
CLAN won category 4, which is for industrial estates, large factory sites, large office blocks, light industrial units, community facilities, churches, garages, hotels and guest houses with open fronting. There were 68 entrants in the competition as a whole with gardens and schools being judged over a 3-week period from July 15 to August 2, 2019.
During the judging, entrants were assessed on their design, quality of horticultural features, floral displays and standards of maintenance, with some categories also judged on their sustainable and biodiversity initiatives to conserve energy and encourage wildlife and their habitat.
The gardens at CLAN House were commended by the judges for well-maintained borders and grass, cultivation standards and colourful displays. Furthermore, the garden areas, which are used by people affected by cancer, were praised for a good mix of well-stocked planting.
Fiona McPherson, volunteer manager said: “We are delighted to have won this award for the third year in. The gardens at CLAN House are very important as they provide not just an uplifting and positive view from inside CLAN House and CLAN Haven, but the secluded areas offer quiet and private places for contemplation or discussion.
“The gardens are maintained by our garden volunteers by Moira Cameron, Lorraine Rough, Shonagh McFaydyen and Raymond Proudfoot who work tirelessly no matter what weather to keep the borders tidy and also planting to make sure that we have a great display all year-round.
“Included in CLAN’s garden is our beautiful sensory garden which was opened two years ago thanks to support of Aberdeen Standard Investments Charitable Foundation and TechnipFMC.
“People visiting CLAN enjoy the gardens and wherever possible we use the outside areas for activities including drawing and painting. Despite being in the heart of the city, CLAN’s gardens provide a relaxing oasis for people going through very difficult times.
Based in Aberdeen, the charity covers the whole of north-east Scotland, Moray, Orkney and Shetland. CLAN has a presence in Ballater, Banchory, Buckie, Crimond, Elgin, Inverurie, Lossiemouth, Turriff, Kirkwall and Lerwick.
