Aberdeen Central Library will be marking Diabetes Week on June 11 - 17. They are hosting a series of fascinating free talks from trailblazing city experts on the condition which now affects more than one in twenty of the population today.
The three talks which explores Aberdeen and diabetes commence on June 10 - monday at 6pm with ‘What do you know about Diabetes Trailblazers?’ which will see Dr Ken McHardy, Aberdonian and retired Diabetes consultant outline his city's pre-eminent place in the history of diabetes. Dr McHardy will tell the stories of James Matthews Duncan, Nobel prize winner J.J.R. Macleod and Robin Lawrence co-founder of Diabetes UK.
On June 12, at 6pm, GP and Diabetes MCN Clinical Lead Dr Alasdair Jamieson will explore how diabetes is growing in prevalence locally and nationally, the possible reasons behind this and the impact this is having on the population. He will outline how technology is being harnessed to help people live well with diabetes and the plans that are in place to reduce the prevalence of diabetes and make way for a healthier future for all.
The week will be rounded up with a talk on June 17, at 6pm ‘Diet and Diabetes - no single diet fits all!’ where professor Baukje de Roos from The Rowett Institute, University of Aberdeen will talk about research surrounding what makes somebody a responder or a non-responder to a dietary treatment for Type two Diabetes. Possible factors such as DNA, body composition, gender, gut bacteria or where people live will be discussed.
Aberdeen City Council cultural spokeswoman, councillor Marie Boulton, said: “Aberdeen clinicians and researchers have played a huge part in tackling a condition which sadly seems to be increasingly prevalent in the UK.
"The perception of diabetes for many people is that a simple inject or tablet will address the condition when this is far from the reality. The health implications of not addressing diabetes and for the wider public in not being fully aware of the risks of the condition is disastrous for the individual, their families and the heath service in the UK.
“This a great opportunity to hear some of our local experts at first hand for what I know will be three fascinating talks on such an important issue”.
